Hi Monica! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat. We’re so inspired by your love and passion for yoga and pilates. Can you tell us a little about your journey?

Thank you so much for having me! Yes of course - for as long as I can remember, I have always have been really active. I trained in classical ballet from a young age, and always felt called to express myself through movement. In my first few years at university studying social work, I found that my posture and mental health were being affected so I made the conscious effort to incorporate more yoga and pilates into my schedule to balance my body and mind. Needless to say, it’s changed my life in more ways than one.

I quickly became enamoured by both yoga and pilates - my life was just so much better when I was practicing consistently! My mood lifted, I felt more connected to my body and breath, and I was just an all round better person. I knew that I had to continue along this path, and that I wanted to share this with others. Fast forward a few years later and here I am!

You manage a studio and you also have your own studio, the Flow State, what’s a typical day like for you?

It's certainly very busy, that's for sure! My days tend to start with teaching a few public classes, then I enjoy my morning coffee or tea while getting through a sea of admin. I'll slot in a yoga practice or a session at the gym, then in the afternoon I'll see a few private clients and maybe get to an evening yoga or pilates class. I always manage to squeeze in a few walks with my very playful greyhound too!

What’s the main point of difference that sets The Flow State apart and what made you decide to open your own studio?

The Flow State is truly client-centered, and I am so proud of this! I wanted to create an intimate experience for students to explore their bodies and breaths, and to be able to foster a safe environment for people to challenge their perception of their capacity and ability. Once I had it in my head that I wanted to create this space, there was no going back!

What does your personal weekly workout routine look like and what keeps you motivated?

I am lucky enough to have a strong personal practice, and take the sporadic slots of time in between clients and classes when I can. Otherwise, I try to make it to a few public classes a week, with plenty of personal practice and experimentation each day. One of my favourite things to do is to get together with friends and just flow!

I love that the practice helps me come back to centre. Whether it’s a strong Pilates session or dynamic vinyasa flow, or a gentle mobility-based session or Yin yoga, I always feel more centred after practicing.

How do pilates and yoga help us connect with ourselves and stay balanced?

Yoga and pilates actually complement each other beautifully, and together can help to create a balance. Physically, I find the contractile and repetitive nature of Pilates movements really provides the stability that static yoga postures can offer. Both practices ask you to be completely present with where you are in that moment, and to use the breath and movement to nourish that space.

The essential 5...

1. Go-to coffee order

I start the day off with a warm oat cap. Once I've had my coffee for the day, I love a sticky chai with oat milk, sometimes even an extra drizzle of honey. Yum!

2. Fav cocktail

Can't go past an Aperol :)

3. What are you watching at the moment?

I'm working my way through an online intensive with Kino McMacGregor, a wonderful Ashtanga teacher based in America. She is so informative and engaging, I could listen to her all day.

4. Fav local restaurant/cafe

Two Chaps in Marrickville have the most delicious food, and always have the best selection of donuts - who doesn't love a sweet treat!

5. Morning or afternoon workout?

There is nothing quite like a morning practice! To practice sun salutations as the sun rises is a true gift.
